A summer calligraphy workshop for kids has just been finished. I think it would be a bittersweet memory for the kids since they were quite clueless at the beginning, and little by little, they started to hold the pen with confident to write their first letters. I was glad that they enjoyed the process and I was happy that some of them were quite eager to learn and were fast learners.
Painting is always one of the best art therapies. Anyone can paint, once you pick up the brush, and start putting the colours on the canvas, not only it is a hand-brain ordination exercise, it is also the beginning of unifying your inner self and outer self . Your painting shows your honesty and sincere, and it somehow releases the oppressions and restraints inside you.
I do art-jamming sometimes, it helps to refresh yourself and re-configuring your thoughts, so that you can understand your distress that you are dealing with. People who suffer from trauma are encouraged to do art, specially painting. There are several spots for art-jamming in Hong Kong, give it a try. I am always inspired and fascinated by the works of Hungarian illustrator Willy Pogany. His illustrative works for children books, poetry and other books had been oriented heavily with fairly tales, which were considered as "Art Nouveau" (New Art), a new art style that embraces graphic art, architecture and decorative art. Of all of his art works, I mostly admire his pen and ink pieces. The heavy dark lines in his works are dreamy and warm. His pastel and watercolour works also bring out the mystical and surreal atmospheres. Other of his works such as book covers also showed interlace patterns and ornamentation of Celtic Art.
Many people have different ways of combining works and images. For me, I like to express messages by designing my own book. This process involves book cover design and book-binding. The book reveals the kind of quality that is so unique and complex, and that only represents your own intellectual self.
